Unplug the unit, do not attempt if you do not feel safe doing this repair.

This is the pump I chose as a replacement, it can go inside the existing box or be outside (my preference is outside.) Check with local aquarium store for the pump.

The old pump was rotted out, I feel that the pump will last longer if left out of the box.

After you cut off the wires to the old pump you may leave it in or take it out. Put a bit of electrical tape on the ends of the wires. The only reason you are cutting the wires is to reduce the noise and electrical use and lower the temperature in the box.

Note that I have pulled the existing hose out of the box and connected it to a new pump. Once you have done this you will not have to open the box again to replace the pump since it is now external.

Test it bubbles great and smells like ozone again.
