March/April, 2000 Number 32

Dear Friend,

Dr. Clark’s "Motion To Dismiss" hearing, which was set for Feb 8, 2000 was postponed at the request of the new prosecutor as he is in a jury trial.

Tentatively, the hearing is set for March 7, 2000. But this may be postponed also as Dr. Clark’s Attorney, Steve Dillon, has a trial ongoing at that time.

Regardless, the "Motion to Dismiss" hearing will be held in front of the new judge, who will be seeking re-election very soon — so Tim Bolen, Dr. Clark’s publicist, and everyone of us who can, will be there with the networks and the newspapers.

Despite the bad weather (snow and ice everywhere) about two hundred people, from all over the world, came to meet conventional medicine’s idea of "The Most Dangerous Woman in America," Hulda Regehr Clark, Ph.D., ND, in Louisville, Kentucky, January 29th and 30th.

Note: No audiotapes of this event were made as the weather prevented the audio/video team from attending. However, a national radio personality interviewed Dr. Clark and several of her patients during the weekend (this interview will be available soon).

Next chance to hear and see Hulda Clark in person — Toronto, Canada, Saturday and Sunday, March 18, 19, 2000 at the Canadian Consumer Health Organization Show. Dr. Clark is scheduled to give a lecture on Saturday at 3 pm and present her workshop on Sunday for six hours (the schedule now says the workshop will be held between 3 pm and 4:25 pm, but this will be revised and flyers will be given at the door announcing when her 6 hour workshop will begin.) The show runs Saturday, 9 am-9:30 pm and Sunday, 9 am-8 pm. The address of the show is: 255 Front St. W., North Building, Main and Second Floors and Theatre Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Of all the books, interviews and lectures Dr. Clark has presented over the years the Dedication and Acknowledgements in her new Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual — Experimental Procedures for Biological Investigations Using Syncrometry have helped me to understand her the most:

Dedication

To my parents, Jacob Peter Regehr and Maria Loewen Regehr who fled Russia during the Russian revolution. Arriving in Canada in 1926, their economic hopes were high but were soon dashed by the Great Depression. Yet their cultural standards endured, namely education and achievement. Mealtime was the opportunity and sounding board for new ideas. My father regularly discussed his latest inventions, asking for input by any of his young children. My mother encouraged and praised his ideas and achievements. She reiterated, almost daily, the importance of education. And so these parents, despite abject poverty, and many years on Relief, raised a family of 5 children, all of whom would graduate from college. They showed me that the joy of imagination, creativity and plain work can surmount extreme stress and pain in life’s circumstances, in much the same way as religion and philosophy have over the course of human history. They also treasured music and any kind of intellectual activity. Their teaching and example were my priceless heritage.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank the Bloomington Amateur Radio Club for encouragement to pursue experimentation at a time when women were just beginning to be heard and seen in the field of electronics.

Thanks are also due to my son, Geoffrey Allen Clark, whose Christmas gift of a Radio Shack 200-in-One Kit, started this whole adventure. I am grateful to my son Douglas, for devoting time and creative energy toward automating the Syncrometer. And further appreciation goes to my third son, Robert, whose career in inventing is an inspiration to us all.

Note: A second dedication is printed on our envelope for this issue. To purchase Dr. Clark’s Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual please see our order form.

Success Stories Using The Clark Method

Case #1

Dear Dr. Clark,

This is my story. After being diagnosed with 3rd stage ovarian cancer on January 15th 1996, I was treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy. The first surgery was a total hysterectomy with debulking of 25% of the tumor. Chemotherapy consisted of Cysplatin and Taxol. A second look surgery was done in August 1996 and revealed three remaining areas of microscopic tumor. I then went on intra-abdominal chemotherapy (Fudr) which was completed on December 4, 1966. In April 1997 my Ca 125 rose from 14 to 70. By June it was 265. A CAT Scan revealed enlarged nodes in the pelvic area of my abdomen.

Two doctors from Memorial Hospital in NY and Stoney Brook Hospital on Long Island stated that by all indications the cancer was coming back and there wasn’t any hope for a cure at this time. They put me on Tamoxifen and stated maybe it would help, but one doctor stated she thought it was just a placebo and I should live my life now because there wasn’t too much hope for a long future. More surgery and chemotherapy were options to retard the growth of the tumor. I was very weak from the treatments and had pains in my abdomen, which I believed to be caused by the surgery, and asthma, a long-standing condition.

At this time I decided to look for an alternative health practitioner, hoping to live out my remaining time in a healthier state. I went to an herbalist, and followed Dr. Weil’s recommendations. I began to feel better. Then I found Dr. Clark’s book in a health food store and decided to follow her advise since her theory made absolute sense to me. I also met Isaac Oberndorfer who was a proponent of Dr. Clark’s theories. I will always be grateful to him for providing me with information, support and hope. I took it one step at a time, since Dr. Clark’s remedies can be quite overwhelming in the beginning. I cleaned my house out, took the parasite cleanse, changed my diet to fresh fruits and vegetables (no red meats) and much to my surprise, except for giving up nail polish, it wasn’t that difficult. Toward the end of the parasite cleanse, I began to cough up very large quantities of purulent mucus. It lasted three days. After that episode I felt really great. My abdominal pain and asthma were gone. I had a lot of energy and I was able to run and not get out of breath. I hadn’t been able to do this for 18 years.

In September of 1997, my CAT Scan was normal except for some gall stones, all the enlarged lymph nodes were gone . . . my Ca 125 was down to 100.

Currently I’m continuing Dr. Clark’s recommendations (Liver Cleanses, Kidney Cleanse, etc.). I would never go back to my old life style since I’m feeling better than I’ve felt in years.

Thank you Dr. Clark for your knowledge and dedication toward finding a cure for all these tragic diseases that cause so much sadness and pain. You have advanced us into the next millennium with your theories and research.

Case #2

Dear Dr. Clark,

A close personal friend who is 33 years old has suffered for years from severe allergies, migraines and loose bowels. I finally convinced her to try the Zapper. Almost immediately, she noticed a decrease in troubles with the allergies, her migraines did not last as long (but they were more intense) and her bowel troubles stopped completely, saving her from occasional embarrassment. She also has had cancer of the cervix and they also found what they called a demoid when they went in to remove the cancer. She tells me she will continue to zap every day until she feels she can reduce it to only a few times a week. Also, she is moving out of her poorly ventilated first floor apartment, which is right next to the laundry room, and into a two-story townhouse. I think she will see even more improvements after the move.

Case #3

Dear Dr. Clark,

My 22-month-old son had a severe rash on his legs and arms. We began a daily zapping regimen with him and we were successful!!! The rash is clearing up and he is no longer scratching. We applied a mixture of Jojoba oil and tea tree oil to the skin as well. If only we could pinpoint what it is caused by. Meanwhile, we will build up his immune system with herbs, etc. (he has not been vaccinated). Thank you!!!!!

Case #4:

Dear Dr. Clark,

I came across your website as I was surfing the net and just wanted to mention that I did your parasite detox with a patient last year and am very pleased that I did. The patient was HIV positive and no trace of the virus can be found in him now. I did the detox too, just to keep him company, but realize that it was a wise thing to do as a preventative to possible future problems. I just thought you would find our experiences interesting.

Your friend, AE, MA

Questions and Answers from Geoff Clark’s Web Site
(with permission)

Note: I apologize for neglecting to give David Amrein the credit for asking Dr. Clark the Questions and for the Testimonials he contributed to the #31 issue of this newsletter.

Question #1: Can you please tell me the difference between Dr. Clark’s remedy vs. ozone therapy? I’ve read articles that state ozone is probably the best anti-parasitic remedy available so I’m confused as to what to do. Please advise.

Geoff Clark: Dr. Clark is certain that there must be many things that kill parasites, other than the herbs she found to be effective. She has tested people who have done ozone therapy and found them to be free of the major parasites, so that is evidence that ozone is effective, too.

Question #2: I am interested in this but could not find anything about what AGE is safe to "experiment" with in Dr. Clark’s The Cure for All Diseases. Is it fine for a four-year-old?

Geoff Clark: I have used the zapper on my one year old, but I don’t think Dr. Clark (or myself) would claim that enough research has been done to know FOR CERTAIN that it’s safe on everyone of every age under every circumstance. You should use your discretion. Question #3: I am writing hoping that you might be willing to answer some questions I have regarding Hulda Clark’s parasite program/protocol and its suitability for children. My daughter is almost five and has had bouts with eczema and asthma. We have spoken to several alternative health care professionals and discovered she is allergic to several major foods i.e. wheat, gluten, peanut, and eggs. I would like to try the parasite program on her since Dr. Clark’s book suggests that eczema and asthma are due to roundworms (Ascaris). My concern is that I know that I can not get my daughter to swallow pills. Do you have any other suggestions as to how I could get her to take the wormwood, and cloves? Also can children use the zapper?

Dr. Clark: Yes and yes. Mix supplements straight in honey; give by spoon. Have no pets. Do liver cleanse, changing hours to 5, 7, 9 instead of 6, 8, 10. Give child as much as child will take; no need to take all of each potion. Flavor Epsom salts with vitamin C powder.

Question #4: We have a 33-year-old woman with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, who has had bad headaches for years and chronic pain. She did the parasite cleanse, then started the kidney cleanse for 11 days, but had to stop. She had very bad headaches and vomiting. Can she do the Liver Cleanse anyway without any problems?

Dr. Clark: NO. Start over with the Kidney Cleanse but only at half dose. Go more slowly until well tolerated. Attend to bowel function, it must be daily at least. Best to add bowel program including enemas. The real problem is residual parasite or reinfection from pets.

Question #5: Here is a question that has occurred to me regarding this cure: If all cancer is due to the combination of fluke infestation and propyl alcohol, why is it that animals also develop cancer? Do they have propyl alcohol in their systems as well?

Geoff Clark: Yes. That’s why Dr. Clark recommends feeding pets table scraps. It may not be as "balanced" as that scientific blend chow, but it won’t have picked up solvents from the chopping-mixing-flowing-canning process either.

Question #6: My wife is suffering from Meduallary Carcinoma (a form of thyroid cancer) and we were wondering if Hulda Clark’s method of curing cancer would be useful for someone with this form of cancer.

Geoff Clark: Dr. Clark calls her book The Cure For ALL Cancers because she hasn’t found a form that didn’t have the parasite-solvent connection, and as you can see from the case histories, she has tested MANY forms of cancer.

Question #7: I just received the results of my bone density tests. The results were bad.

I have full-blown Osteoporosis. The results show a significant loss of calcium and magnesium.

Dr. Clark: Osteoporosis should not be difficult to clear up! Just vitamin D and calcium usually does it. But adding a little boron, magnesium, and manganese would be a good idea for a full-blown case. See Disease book for amounts and further discussion.

Question #8: Do you have any direction that I might go on treatment for ALS (Lou Gerhigs Disease)? I have listened to some of Dr. Clark’s tapes, but find nothing specific on how to go about treating chronic degenerative diseases, even though her information has lead me to believe that anything can be cured.

Dr. Clark: The message of my book is that there are no "chronic degenerative diseases," that they all have a parasite plus pollutant etiology. I have only treated 3 or 4 cases of ALS, not enough to report on, but they were consistent with the theory, and outcomes were good. So that is the best approach.

Question #9: We have received queries on how to take wild yam root. And would like to know what people take it for.

Dr. Clark: There is a pamphlet on Wild Yam in Health Food Stores. I reference it in The Cure For All Diseases — perhaps under infertility. It is also traditionally used for liver improvement. I suggest getting it in bulk from San Francisco Herbs (listed under "Sources" in my books) and make tea, as one does for kidney herbs (1/4 c dried herb to 3 cups water). Drink 1/2 cup/day.

Question #10: Why don’t you have zappers that have A/C adapters for wall outlets?

Geoff Clark: We do not use A/C adapters for legal reasons. If someone thought the zapper harmed him or her, a court would wonder if the zapper malfunctioned and let house current shock the patient.

Question #11: Could you refer me to any one who has been cured of diabetes using Dr. Clark’s treatments for parasites? I already have the herbs and a zapper. I would like to get some independent testimonials to present to a friend with diabetes and then offer him the supplies. He is using an insulin pump right now, and may be dying.

Geoff Clark: Although I applaud your efforts to save your friend, testimonials are impractical. We have tried before with volunteers (you can’t pay them, that would negate their credibility) and even the most avid volunteer quickly tires. Callers typically don’t just want a good report, they want to know all the details, argue their merits, get advice about their personal situation, and call back several times as more questions occur to them.

Dr. Clark’s parasite program is inexpensive, not very time-consuming, doesn’t conflict with clinical medication, and has the potential to help greatly. It’s been our experience that if that doesn’t motivate someone, then you can’t rely on them to follow the program no matter how much you encourage them.

More from Bonnie:

Because my brother has developed a painful wrist from his work as a plumber for 35 years, I’ve been watching for anything new for re-building cartilage in the joints and I have found something that looks promising — "SAM-e."

SAM-e is also recommended for depression and raising energy levels (I have enclosed a great newsletter about it written by Loren Biser — see page 8).

Dale and I have been taking the Dews SAM-e for several weeks and we both noticed an increase in our energy levels from the first day. We have been breaking the scored caplet in two and taking ½ in the morning and ½ in the afternoon. This amount gives us exactly the right amount of energy and I’ve noticed that my memory is better also.

In doing research about SAM-e for my brother’s wrist pain I came across the following on page 20 of the booklet called SAM-e, The Remarkable Substance that Promotes Detoxification, Relieves Arthritis and Fights Depression by Rita Elkins:

Osteoarthritis and SAM-e

Osteoarthritis, which is a natural consequence of aging joints, attacks the knees, hips, and fingers. It occurs when the cartilage cushion, which lines the joints, becomes stiffer and rougher. Consequently, bone can actually overgrow the joint area, causing swelling and decreased mobility. In its final stages the pain may actually subside, however the joint is no longer functional. Joints in the hands, feet and arms become extremely painful, stiff and eventually deformed. This type of arthritis can affect the entire body.

While scientists are the first to admit they’re not exactly sure how SAM-e works to benefit osteoarthritis, the positive effects observed cannot be denied. One group of scientists in Madrid, Spain published a 1997 study, which stated that SAM-e was able to protect cells against tumor necrosis factor, which adversely affects both synovial cells and matrix protein production in joints. Both of these factors are innately involved in the arthritic process, which breaks down joint cartilage. They concluded that SAM-e may be able to protect joints against the damaging effects of substances like tumor necrosis factor. They stated that in cultured synovial cells, SAM-e restores basal conditions after cell damage caused by TNF.

A Two-Year German Trial:

The Konig Institute of General Medicine in Germany conducted a long-term, multi-center open trial involving 10 general practitioners to test the effectiveness of SAM-e for osteoarthritis. 108 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and spine were studied for 24 months. At the end of the 24-month observation period, 97 of the patients were still in the study. The patients received 600 mg. of SAM-e daily (equivalent to three tablets of 200 mg. each) for the first two weeks and then 400 mg. daily (equivalent to two tablets of 200 mg. each) thereafter, until the end of the 24th month of treatment.

The severity of the clinical symptoms (morning stiffness, pain at rest, and pain on movement) was assessed using scoring before the start of the treatment, at the end of the first and second week of treatment, and then monthly until the end of the 24-month period. SAM-e showed good clinical effectiveness and was well tolerated by the patients.

The improvement of the clinical symptoms during therapy with SAM-e was already evident after the first weeks of treatment and continued up to the end of the 24th month. Non-specific side effects occurred in 20 patients, and in no case did therapy have to be discontinued. Most side effects disappeared during the course of therapy. SAM-e administration also improved the depressive feelings often associated with osteoarthritis and the disease did not progress.

Italian Studies:

Experimental investigations suggest that the administration of SAM-e exerts analgesic and antiphlogistic activities and stimulates the synthesis of beneficial proteoglycans in joint cartilage cells with minimal or no side effects on the gastrointestinal tract and other organs. The results of extensive clinical trials, which have enrolled about 22,000 patients with osteoarthritis in the last five years, support the clinical effectiveness and the optimal tolerability of SAM-e administration. The intensity of therapeutic activity of SAM-e against osteoarthritis is similar to that exerted by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but its tolerability is higher. Based on these findings, SAM-e is proposed as the prototype of a new class of safe drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

SAM-e VS. Drugs for Joint Pain:

One fascinating study stacked SAM-e up against ibuprofen for people who had osteoarthritis in their hips and knees. Both drugs were given orally, 400 mg. three daily for 30 days. SAM-e exhibited slightly more marked activity than the reference drug in the management of the various painful symptoms of the joint disease. Minor side effects developed in five patients of the SAM-e group, as compared with 16 patients of the ibuprofen group. Other studies pitted SAM-e against other anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen, prioxicam and indomethacin and obtained similar results. What these studies suggest is that SAM-e not only protects joints against biocompounds that damage cartilage, but that it also has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect as well. Morevoer, unlike prescription drugs, which can put a strain on the stomach and liver, SAM-e, has no toxicity and even boosts cell detoxification in liver cells.

How a woman conquered 25 years of chronic depression and fatigue . . .

— SAM-e — An Investigative Update:

How the nutrient SAM-e saved my life.

— by Betty Arber

A true story —

"For 25 years I took antidepressants. It was like living under a dark cloud. But that was before I discovered the nutrient SAM-e. Now, everyday is like sunshine. I’m so happy, I can’t believe it!

"Thanks to the nutrient SAM-e, I’m totally off antidepressants. Within days I could tell a big difference. Now, I have so much energy, I don’t even need coffee. I get by on one hour less sleep."

An Explosion of Interest

Because of an article in Newsweek, July 5, 1999 entitled "What is SAM-e? One pill, many uses" SAM-e is the hottest nutrient around. It has been medically proven in Europe for 20 years.

Newsweek claimed SAM-e was effective for helping depression, arthritis, liver disease and pain.

If you are depressed, overweight or tired, the nutrient SAM-e may be the answer to your prayers (SAM-e stands for S-Adenosyl Methionine and is pronounced ‘Sammy.’)

SAM-e is not a vitamin, an herb or a hormone. It’s a natural substance produced in all living cells. Very simply, SAM-e helps to neutralize toxins in your body. Children normally have seven times more SAM-e in their bodies than adults. Could this be why adults often feel so much happier and energetic after taking SAM-e? Perhaps.

"25 years of emotional darkness is now
over. To me, SAM-e is magic." — Betty Arber

Right now, sales of SAM-e are booming. Virtually every health site on the Internet is promoting SAM-e. CNN just reported on SAM-e. Major movie stars now rave about the wonders of SAM-e. One health food store reported locking up their SAM-e tablets under the counter because people were stealing them.

Before I wrote this story, I bought a big supply of SAM-e to test. I gave one bottle to a friend named Melanie who is a professional skeptic when it comes to health remedies.

Two days after trying SAM-e she said, "Nothing you gave me ever worked and I’m sorry about all the bad things I ever said about your health articles. But this stuff is a pure miracle! I can hardly believe I’m not tired anymore. And I’m not even hungry."

I tested the SAM-e tablets on another woman who was horribly depressed and in tears from a recent operation. One hour later she was laughing and felt so good she decided to go shopping — even though her doctor said to rest for a week.

The big question is, Are all brands of SAM-e equally effective? The answer is — NO! Some of the SAM-e formulas sold in the biggest chains did absolutely nothing for some people. Other brands caused various problems. As one reader said, "The difference in brands was like night and day." But overall SAM-e has given tremendous benefit to tens of thousands of people — without serious side effects. For conditions like depression and arthritis, as Newsweek said, ‘The implications are staggering.’

"I never had nails like this before." — Betty

Note: Many women said this about the SAM-e Plus

What follows is an interview with Betty Arber, the woman quoted on the cover. Betty’s story should inspire anyone who is chronically depressed and exhausted. If she made it, it seems anyone can. Betty lived in Turkey for 20 years and is now living in the U.S.

"Before SAM-e, I thought I had to live with
my depression for the rest of my life."

Question: When did your depression begin?

Betty: I was depressed when I was just a child. I had suicidal thoughts from the age of nine; I knew something was horribly wrong. My whole life was like living under a dark cloud. The sun would shine and it would be a bad day. It was 25 years of bad days. It was 24-7; twenty-four hours of darkness, seven days a week.

Depression is like being in a hole and you can’t see the top. Even on a vacation day I would say, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ I didn’t want to do anything. I functioned, but everything was an effort.

Question: Did you ever see a doctor?

Betty: I went to over 20 doctors and took at least 20 different types of antidepressants. In the early days, antidepressants were more like tranquilizers. They made me feel worse; I just wanted to sleep. But the thoughts of death and suicide would continue, no matter which drug I took.

"I tried St. John’s Wort. It didn’t work."

Question: Did the drug Prozac help?

Betty: It helped a lot; I didn’t have the lows. But it also killed my sex life, which can destroy a relationship. It also made me hyper which made me feel miserable. I had chronic hyperactivity; I chattered like a chipmunk.

I went on and off Prozac many times. In Turkey, Prozac is not a prescription item. You just go to the drugstore and get it. But many times when I went off Prozac, I felt that downward spiral coming on and had to start taking it again. But I knew I had to rid myself of putting a drug in my body. I knew it wasn’t right.

Question: Did you ever try the popular herb, St. John’s Wort, which supposedly helps depression?

Betty: I tried it and it made me feel awful; I was lethargic. At that point, I had given up on natural therapies and went back on Prozac. I was prepared to live with this for the rest of my life.

Question: How did you learn about SAM-e?

Betty: I was visiting the States and I got a Prevention magazine and saw an ad for SAM-e. I shopped around for the best prices and eventually bought a brand at the local mall. I liked it. I said, "This is great!" Within four days, I could tell a huge difference. I had more energy, but not a lot more energy. Plus, the negative thought patterns weren’t as prevalent. It seemed as good as Prozac, but without the side effects.

"The SAM-e Plus from Texas was about
ten times as potent as the mall version. It was like night and day."

Question: But you told me you’re not taking the mall version of SAM-e any longer.

Betty: What happened was, I got in touch with a tiny vitamin company in Texas and asked if they had a SAM-e formula. They said yes and sent me a sample. But this didn’t work as well as the mall version. However, a few weeks later they called and said they had a newer, more potent version of the SAM-e formula and asked if I was interested.

I tried this newer version, the SAM-e plus, as they called it, and this time there was no question. It was ten times better than the mall version and far less expensive. The mall version never gave me the energy nor the well being. For the mall version I said, "I can’t believe how much better I feel." For the Texas version I said, "I really can’t believe how much better I feel!" The SAM-e Plus was like magic!

SAM-e helps to purify your body:

Biochemically, SAM-e helps to keep the body free of toxins. It helps turn toxins into useable hormones like adrenaline, serotonin, melatonin and dopamine. It does this through a chemical process called, ‘Methylation.’

SAM-e speeds up the metabolism and gets rid of excess water in the body. That’s why many women claim to urinate more, as they lose excess, stagnant water.

Many say their clothes become baggy.

Note: This only applies to the Dews SAM-e Plus. Regular SAM-e isn’t known to cause weight loss.

Question: So are you off Prozac?

Betty: That’s gone forever. I would never go back to Prozac; not when I’m feeling this good.

Question: How about all those thoughts of death?

Betty: Those are gone too; totally gone. I’m here for a purpose and now I know it.

"I feel so much energy from the Dews SAM-e I don’t need my morning coffee."

Question: How would you describe your energy?

Betty: I now have such an abundance of energy, I sleep one hour less at night. I wake up an hour earlier, refreshed and ready to go. Usually, I had to have 3-4 cups of coffee just to get going. Now I don’t need the coffee. I wake up and walk a mile and a half. Now, I’m busy all day remodeling my house. I’m up and down ladders 45 times a day. Before, that would have been a disaster.

"My hair now grows like crazy." — Betty
Another woman said, "My hair grew 2 inches in 2 weeks."

Question: Any other benefits from the SAM-e?

Betty: My nails are growing like crazy and so is my hair. Plus, my elimination in the bathroom is huge compared to before. I swear this is all true.

Question: What advice could you give someone who is tired and depressed?

Betty: I would definitely suggest they try the SAM-e. This nutrient has been like a ray of sunshine in my life. For me, the sun shines every day. My wish would be that it would work as well for everyone. That would be just fantastic! As they say in the old song, ‘You’ll never get her back on the farm once she sees Paree.’ I think that applies to SAM-e. The main this is, don’t give up!

White spot on neck 40% gone.

SAM-e Plus secrets . . .

"I super-charged the SAM-e to get it through the body quicker."
— Jim Dews, Biochemist

I recently interviewed Mr. Jim Dews, the manufacturer of the SAM-e Plus nutrient:

Question: Many people claim just one half of one of your SAM-e tablets is more effective than 5-10 tablets of other SAM-e brands. Why is that?

Dews: We hear that quite often. Our SAM-e Plus is more potent for many reasons. First, most SAM-e formulas contain just SAM-e and fillers. Ours contains a special version of SAM-e, plus other nutrients to get the SAM-e through the body quicker; vitamin B6, vitamin B-12 and folate. Plus, I added curcumin extract, a potent herb from India to help inflammation.

"I looked at the SAM-e compound and figured out a better way to make it."

Question: Is the active ingredient SAM-e the same in all formulas?

Dews: There are many grades of SAM-e, just like there are many grades of vitamin C. Just because you see the name SAM-e on the label, it isn’t a 100% guarantee you are getting a top quality SAM-e — in the amounts claimed.

Under contract, I recently tested 41 different supplements from health food stores and Supermarkets. I did this for a major, regional magazine article. Over 35% of the products failed to contain what the label claimed. Five of those products didn’t have the active ingredient at all. None whatsoever! Some of the companies that failed were major pharmaceutical firms. One brand that failed was a best-seller!

On all the products we produce, including SAM-e, we don’t cut corners. I don’t want to be the biggest; I just want to be the best. Yes, our SAM-e is special. But don’t believe me, try as many brands as you want. You decide.

Question: Why is your SAM-e Plus not enteric coated? Many brands are.

Dews: Ours is so stable, we don’t have to coat the outer tablet. A clinic and pharmaceutical company stated that our SAM-e was more stable than other SAM-e versions from Europe.

"If I tell the truth, no one will believe me."

"I had a muscle injury about 20 years ago, which caused constant back pain. I tried everything — doctors, chiropractors, injections, steroids and painkillers. Nothing helped. I had given up and planned on living with it. I was in total misery. Someone gave me the Dews SAM-e Plus. Within 2-3 hours the pain was gone! I am a very skeptical person, medical all the way. But this stuff works." — Dallas Police Officer

Arthritis: "I took the #1 arthritis medication, but I still had a severe grinding pain in my knees. In less than 30 days on the SAM-e, I have 40% less pain. Plus, I lost almost 15 pounds."

Sex: (Editor, Many comments on sex, but won’t publish.)

"I lost 30 pounds on the SAM-e Plus — on less than one bottle.
Plus my joints don’t ache in the cold.
My hair grows fast now!" — Dee Dee Scott, Texas

Common benefits: On the Dews SAM-e, most felt more energetic. But this was a natural energy — "energy without being hyper." Since the energy level increased, many didn’t feel the need to eat as much. Many women said they urinated more, which got rid of excess water. Their clothes became baggy.

Dietary intake: For depression, one health book said to start with 1,600 mg. a day of SAM-e. But for the Dews version of SAM-e, this would be insane advice. For that version, most only needed 400 mgs. a day — two tablets. One policeman got fabulous results on only ½ a Dews SAM-e tablet twice a day. The tablet apparently gives so much energy, one shouldn’t take it after 3-4 in the afternoon. One person took it at 9:00 at night, and they were up at 3:00 am cleaning. Start with small quantities.

"Do you know those days when everything is clicking and goes your way? With SAM-e Plus, everyday is like that."

Conclusion: One book said SAM-e tablets in blister packs were best. Often, even these tablets didn’t work. One reader took these for two weeks and felt nothing. Yet on the second day of the Dews SAM-e Plus she felt instant energy and now needs less sleep.

Whatever SAM-e formula you get, it seems worth trying. It’s rare to see any natural tablet give so many people such tremendous benefit so quickly.

Note #1: If you are on any type of medication, always check with your doctor before you consider changing the dose. Remember, every patient is an experiment, every treatment is an experiment. If you have any medical problem, see your doctor immediately.

Note #2: Many health books say not to take SAM-e for manic depression. Jim Dews wasn’t convinced this applies to the SAM-e Plus. One of his daughters had this condition and received great benefit from SAM-e Plus. But she also took NeuroBoost (also a Dews product. Recommended for brain function).

Note #3: Jim Dews also stated that the SAM-e Plus could be even more effective taken with BHB Plus (also a Dews product. Recommended for liver function).

Note #4: If the SAM-e Plus works well for you consider ordering a large supply, to be safe. The politics of this is scary. Manufacturer claims five-year shelf life if kept cool and dry.

Children have high levels of SAM-e:

Children have up to seven times the level of SAM-e as adults. The road to old age is low SAM-e levels.

"How many times have you seen a child loaded with energy and said, ‘If only I could bottle that energy.’ Well, we now have that bottle. It’s called SAM-e Plus. A child’ energy in a bottle." — Jim Dews, biochemist

For those who feel the Dews SAM-e Plus is worth testing, you can order from the following company: The Road To Health, 1547 Palos Verdes, #314, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. (800) 651-7080.

Dews SAM-e Plus (60 tablets, 200 mg SAM-e)

More from Bonnie:

On February 20, 2000 Dale and I attended a workshop given by Charlotte Gerson at a Health Show in San Francisco. I have known Charlotte for 18 years and make an effort to attend any lectures or workshops she gives in our area. The workshop was given on the Gerson Therapy, which is available in Mexico (and has been since the 1950’s). I spent over a month at the Gerson Clinic in 1982 as the companion of a friend who had cancer.

The following is an excellent description of the Gerson Therapy, reprinted with permission from An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer by W. John Diamond, J.D. and W. Lee Cowden, M.D. with Burton Goldberg, 1997, Future Medicine Publishing, pages 771 to 776 (right before Kelley’s Metabolic Therapy which begins on page 777. (Charlotte said she is a friend of Dr. Kelley’s and asked me to say ‘Hi’ to him for her!).

Gerson Diet Therapy

Max Gerson, M.D. (1881-1959), emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930’s. Shortly after graduating from the University of Freiburg in 1909 where he specialized in internal medicine and physiological chemistry, Dr. Gerson began to experience severe migraine headaches. By 1919, with his medical practice well established, Dr. Gerson had also found a cure for his migraines by reworking his diet to eliminate salt. After succeeding in this, he found that he was able to successfully treat arthritis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and lupus patients with diet alone; then, in 1928, he took the next leap — treating cancer with diet.

"The ideal task of cancer therapy is to restore the function of the oxidizing systems in the entire organism," Dr. Gerson explained. To accomplish this, 3 factors had to be addressed: first, detoxify the body; second, fortify the system with minerals from the potassium group; and third, continuously introduce oxidizing enzymes until the body’s own ability to produce them is reactivated.

The important concept here is oxygen and oxidation. Dr. Gerson understood that cancer cells grow in conditions of limited or no oxygen and through fermentation. "The malignancies in human beings continuously fall back deeper and deeper into fermentation," he said. Regarding potassium, Dr. Gerson stated that in a sick body, and particularly in one that has cancer, potassium is inactive, and sodium and related minerals exist in an unfavorable chemical state.

A key element in the Gerson dietary plan is to reestablish the correct cellular balance between sodium (Na) and potassium (K). "It is my opinion that K and Na also play an important role in the cancer problem." As he explained it, in chronic diseases such as cancer, sodium and calcium invade particular organs and cause their potassium to leech out, disrupting the appropriate balance between the two. "From my own clinical experiments, I have learned that it is not only necessary to change the metabolism in one or another substance (such as potassium and sodium), but it is also necessary to change the intake of proteins, enzymes, vitamins, etc., simultaneously to activate all natural healing forces, which we need for our therapy."

Dr. Gerson further noted that cancer is not caused by a single deficiency, such as of hormones, vitamins, or enzymes. "Cancer is not a single cellular problem; it is an accumulation of numerous damaging factors combined in deteriorating the whole metabolism, after the liver has been progressively impaired in its functions." This slow poisoning of the entire organism, a lowering of the electrical activity in vital organs, and the weakening of the liver, the prime organ of detoxification, creates a "cancerous body that is anergic," says Dr. Gerson. This means that "it cannot prevent cancerous growth nor respond and defend itself against it." Treatment must restore these functions so that the body’s immune response, including the liver, can function appropriately again, Dr. Gerson said. Fundamental among these functions is the "production, activation and reactivation of oxidizing enzymes" capable of raising the level of oxygen in the cells.

Dr. Gerson believed that cancer would not occur in bodies with a properly balanced and functioning liver, pancreas, thyroid, and immune system. In his approach, thyroid extracts seem to enable the body to fight cancer more effectively by stimulating liver and thyroid function. Coffee enemas are used as needed for pain reduction, appetite stimulation, and liver detoxification; patients take 3-4 coffee enemas a day for detoxification and pain relief. Enemas of chamomile tea or castor oil are also used. "Only a detoxified body has both power of resistance and healing," said Dr. Gerson.

There is also supplementation with pepsin (an enzyme), potassium, iodine, niacin, pancreatin (a digestive enzyme culled from bovine pancreas), and vitamin C. The Gerson program also includes salt and sodium restriction and potassium supplementation; high doses of micronutrients, especially through raw fruit and vegetable juices; severe restrictions on fat intake; and a reduction in protein intake by adopting a vegetarian diet. Dr. Gerson also restricted tobacco, sharp spices, tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, alcohol, refined sugar and flour, all processed or canned foods, nuts, mushrooms, soybeans, pickles, cucumbers, pineapples, and all berries (except red currants).

Regarding potassium supplementation, Dr. Gerson recommended 4 teaspoons in juice 10 times daily in a specific chemical formulation he developed on the basis of 300 experiments. Dr. Gerson also recommended high doses of Lugol’s solution (iodine plus potassium iodide) and thyroid extract, which he believed went directly to the tumor.

With his low-fat, nearly vegan (no animal products, including eggs or dairy) dietary regime, Dr. Gerson found that he could reverse the majority of cancer in patients that came to him. Small amounts of dairy products are permitted on this diet. The caloric limit is 2600-3200 calories per day. Patients on the Gerson program supplement their main diet 10 times a day with freshly cut fruit (primarily apple) and vegetable juices (primarily carrot), taken at hourly intervals. This inundates the body every day with the living nutrients from nearly 20 pounds of fresh, organic foods. In fact, Dr. Gerson once estimated the average quantity of fresh, raw vegetables, mostly as juice, that a typical patient might consume in a year on his diet: 1800 pounds carrots, 1300 pounds apples, 350-450 pounds calf’s liver juice, 145 heads of red cabbage, 400 heads lettuce, and 125 pounds of green peppers. In addition, there are large amounts of oranges, grapes, grapefruits, and tomatoes.

As mentioned previously, Dr. Gerson discovered that cancer patients had an excess of sodium far outweighing the potassium in their bodies; the two normally exist in a specific balance to each other. Sodium acts as a poison in the body because it is an enzyme inhibitor, whereas potassium is an enzyme activator. The fruits and vegetables in the Gerson diet help correct the sodium and potassium imbalance which, in turn, helps revitalize the liver so it can again rid the body of malignant cells. The coffee enemas then aid in the elimination of these dead cancer cells.

Many of Dr. Gerson’s cancer patients, who he treated in the 1940’s and 1950’s, are documented to have lived in good health for many decades after their treatment period. For example, a woman in her early forties was diagnosed with advanced melanoma and cervical cancer. Six months after beginning the Gerson therapy, a second biopsy revealed that her cervical cancer had completely disappeared. Similarly her melanoma vanished. That was over 12 years ago, and she has been free of cancer ever since.

This is Bonnie again. The Gerson therapy section goes on to report about a study of 5-year survival rates of malignant melanoma, one of the most deadly cancers.

The results are stunning. Even considering possible weaknesses in the study’s design, the substantial differences in survival between the Gerson patients and conventional patients is too great to be dismissed. Although Dr. Gerson died in 1959, his work is carried on by his daughter, Charlotte Gerson (Strauss), and her staff at the Gerson Institute in Tijuana, Mexico.

I am surprised to note that the Gerson therapy section does not mention Flaxseed oil. When I was staying at the Gerson Institute 12 years ago each patient was given 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily. At the workshop Charlotte stressed how important it is for a cancer patient to take at least one tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily. (The following on flaxseed oil is on pages769-770 of An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer.)

Dr. Johanna Budwig discovered flaxseed oil as a necessity for cancer patients in the early 1950’s. Dr. Budwig stated that the tumor mass resulted from waste accumulations the body cells could not remove because they lacked the energy necessary to do so," says Dr. Etienne Callebout, M.D. "This energy is supplied by electrons donated from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and oxygen, along with other essential nutrients." Flaxseed oil is about 58% alpha-linolenic acid (also called Omega 3 fatty acid). ALA enhances immune function and cellular oxygen use, thereby helping to dissolve tumors.

Based on the work done by Dr. Budwig, we now know that ALA works best when mixed directly into sulfur-rich protein foods. A typical recommended amount of pure virgin, cold-pressed flaxseed oil per day is 1-2 tablespoons, depending on the individual’s condition.

The Flaxseed Oil/Protein Mixture

The Flaxseed oil/Protein Mixture that Dr. Johanna Budwig developed contains electron-rich oils, seed-oils, and high quality proteins, which in combination have the capacity to activate the vital life functions within the body. The life and death of a cell are determined by the ‘coupling’ of fat and protein.

Use this mixture alone or as a base for any and every meal. Consume at least 1-2 tablespoons of Flaxseed oil per day.

There is a caution however: Since flaxseed oil is highly unsaturated, it readily oxidizes when exposed to the open air. If the oil becomes highly oxidized and rancid, it can be dangerous for cancer patients. It has a short shelf life and must be purchased as fresh as possible and always kept tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Never heat or cook cold-pressed (unrefined) flaxseed oil under any circumstances. If these guidelines are not followed, the resulting rancidity makes this oil unfit for human consumption. Vitamins A (or beta-carotene), C, and E, and the minerals zinc, selenium, and sulfur-containing amino acids (such as cysteine) are among the substances most required to protect the essential fatty acids from destruction by oxygen and free radicals.

A $20 million study by the National Cancer Institute in 1990 found that flaxseed oil, but not fish oil, reduced the growth of breast cancers and metastases in laboratory animals when compared to cancerous growth in animals receiving corn oil.

On the following 10 pages please find the articles Charlotte Gerson shared with us at her workshop on February 20, 2000. She is now 78 years young and is as vibrant and energetic as ever. She writes a newsletter every other month and the articles presented here are the ones she believes are the most important.

Research Journal Reports

Hot Dogs Linked to Leukemia, Brain Tumors

by Charlotte Gerson

On June 4th, 1994, an article appeared in the research journal Cancer Causes and Control. The journal article, and two other recently completed studies, including one by Sara Sarasua and David A. Savitz of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, stated that:

The article went on to say that ‘researchers led by University of Southern California epidemiologist John Peters, believe the findings may explain a two-decades rise in reported childhood leukemias and brain tumors. They suggest the trigger for the cancers could be nitrites used to preserve processed meats.’

There have long been reports linking nitrites to nitrosamines when ingested and combined in the digestive system. These nitrosamines have also been described as carcinogens.

When I saw the article, I went to my neighborhood supermarket to look at the ingredients in hot dogs. Various brands are almost identical in their ingredients: Pork, beef, water, salt, corn syrup, mustard, dextrose, spices, onion, garlic, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, and spices extractives (sic). I do not know what this may refer to. But I was rather shocked to find, when checking packages of bologna and salami that their ingredients were identical to those found in hot dogs! In other words, eating hot dogs, plus spiced lunchmeats will increase the toxic load in children.

A newspaper report on the journal article notes, "Such studies are hard to conduct and interpret because it is difficult for subjects to accurately recall what they have eaten in the past."

Nutrition "expert" Michael Pariza of the University of Wisconsin said, "It would be extremely premature to draw any conclusions from this type of study."

The investigators did not advise people to give up hot dogs, saying their "studies are too preliminary to have established a cause and effect link." The research was based on 621 cancer patients and an equal number of controls. In fact, the American Cancer Society specifically said they wanted to study the matter further. They said the same thing in 1981, some 13 years ago, when The Cancer Chronicles wrote an article on carcinogenic nitrates in frankfurters!

It might be worth remembering that when a very few children, certainly far less than 621, suffocated as a result of playing with polyethylene cleaner’s bags, the use of the bags was immediately and sharply curtailed, and warnings were required to be printed on all plastic bags. We seem to be far less concerned with our children’s health and wlfare, choosing to turn a blind eye, when it requires that we look at a food habit that we have given to them, and that we have ourselves.

It is becoming abundantly clear that the food industry, meat packers, FDA and medical community won’t protect us, especially if we do not demand it. They will protect industrial profits, jobs and economic interest, no matter how many of our children it costs. We must protect ourselves! Would it not be much wiser, in the interest of protecting our children, to strongly advise mothers to curtail their children’s consumption of hot dogs and lunchmeats, and print warning labels on their containers until the foods have been proven to be safe? In the light of these findings, and similar findings that have been accumulating for the past 15 years, would it not be in order to warn pregnant women of the potential danger to their fetuses, as we do in the case of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)? Or is it simply easier to blame the demon alcohol, and not look at the other demons we are harboring?

In the meantime, would you want your children to consume any amount of hot dogs, bologna, salami, bacon or ham?

Note by Bonnie: The Kosher Deli in Walnut Creek has Kosher hot dogs without nitrites! [PS Doesn’t pepperoni (that most kids love on pizza) have nitrites?]

The Case Against Chicken

Why don’t the Navajo get Cancer?

by Charlotte Gerson

During the past 8-10 years, many health (and cholesterol) conscious people have changed their eating habits from eating red meat (beef) to consuming more chicken. It now seems questionable that this was such a good idea.

We recently ran across a most interesting article by John Heinerman, Ph.D., published in his Folk Medicine Journal/Spring 1993. While patients during the time they are on the Gerson Therapy are not eating chicken, we feel that all our members and their families need to take note. Therefore, we are reporting on the article at length and with a number of direct quotes.

Dr. Virginia Livingston-Wheeler, in her many years as researcher in the biological sciences, arrived at the conclusion that cancer was probably caused by a viral or microbial agent. She regularly found what she considered the cancer causatve agent in chicken. Furthermore, in Time Magazine, November 26, 1990, a report titled "The Dangers of Foul Fowl" showed that chickens are widely infected with salmonella.

A Dr. De Lamar Gibbons (M.D.) found a different link between chicken and consumption (TB) and cancer. He had practiced medicine for some 17 years in Blanding, San Juan County, Utah and on the nearby Navajo Indian Reservation.

He published an article on November 29, 1987 in the Salt Lake Tribune under the title "Indians Hold Key to Cancer." He reported that neither he, nor two other prominent physicians who had practiced in San Juan County for 32 years and 26 years respectively "have ever seen breast cancer or lung cancer in a Navaho." He wrote that he was certain that cancer can be prevented, and that the Navajos had done this for at least 30 years. He also pointed to the fact that the general diet of the Navajos, to our way of thinking, is very poor indeed. They eat "a high fat diet, consisting of mutton stew, bread deep-fried in mutton tallow, potato chips, soda pop, coffee, beer, candy and Twinkies. They eat virtually no fiber and no vegetables. The nutritional content of their diet is a disaster. Their sanitation in many instances is unbelievably bad. Many draw water from open creeks and have no sanitary facilities (not even out-houses much less indoor plumbing and running water). In short, they do everything wrong, according to the ‘authorities.’ And yet they do not get cancer! They must be doing something right that the rest of us are doing wrong."

Dr. De Lamar Gibbons went further in his studies once he had made this fascinating discovery. He tabulated all the cancer cases he and his colleagues had treated over a 5 year period. They had a population ratio of 40% Indians and 60% Anglos. Yet, out of 97 cancer cases, only 3 were Indians. On another reservation, between 1960 and 1973, of 13,000 admissions, only 13 cases had cancer.

Outside of thoroughly cooking their meat, they totally avoid poultry for religious reasons. We quote from Dr. Gibbon’s article: "In the course of the past 30 years only one of the 5,000 San Juan County Navajos has been found to have developed prostate cancer. This cancer becomes almost universal in aged non-Indian men. Equally remarkable was the discovery that this individual was different from the others of his tribe in another way. He broke a sacred taboo. He raised chickens and ate eggs. (Faithful Navahos shun birds. They believe the flight of birds is not accomplished through the application of the physical laws of aerodynamics. No! Birds are supported in the air by spooky-magic, and are thus to be avoided.)

"One of my Navajo patients developed ovarian cancer. Her life was different. She had been in a nursing home for five years and was served soft eggs each morning."

Dr. Heinerman was so intrigued by these reports that he decided to study them and collect data for himself. He, together with an assistant, personally went to the Havasupai Indian Reservation on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, staying in the village of Supai. He called on an Anglo physician in a town about 65 miles away who had practiced in the village clinic for some 4 years. He confirmed that the Indians basically are not healthy and suffer from many diseases: Diabetes, otitis (inflammation of the ear), alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, hypertension. When he was asked about cancer, he could only remember three cases, all women with ovarian cancer. He added, "It seems like these people just don’t get cancer."

Dr. Heinerman then looked up the son of one of these ovarian cancer patients. He told Dr. Heinerman that his mother, "in her 30’s and 40’s, used to keep a lot of chickens around the house. She was the only one I know of who ate them." The other two ladies who died of ovarian cancer had lived for a while outside of the village in the regular world. Both had eaten the food which is regularly consumed such as chicken, turkey and eggs.

Dr. Heinerman concludes his article by restating the unhealthy general lifestyle of the Indians. He says, "Many of the Havasupai menfolk smoke to some extent. Yet neither Dr. Gibbons nor ourselves ever found any recorded cases of lung cancer among them. Equally amazing is the epidemic of obesity among both tribes, particularly the women. Yet NO cases of breast cancer or colon cancers have ever been detected."

Juvenile Hyperactivity: The Drugging of American Children

by Charlotte Gerson

While various factors seem to be involved in a child’s hyperactivity, most physicians and practitioners of alternative medicine agree that food additives, food allergies and excessive sugar consumption are the crux of the problem. In almost all cases of hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is present. Dr. Jones, [Eric Jones, N.D., Dean of Academic Affairs at Bastyr College in Seattle, Washington, and a naturopathic physician] as quoted in Alternative Medicine, The Definitive Guide, (Compiled by the Burton Goldberg Group, Copywright 1994 by Future Medicine Publishing, Inc. P. 610) states that at least half of his ADD patients Improved when taken off sweeteners such as sugar and corn syrup. A recent study done by the Yale University School of Medicine showed that when children eat sugar, this causes twice the adrenaline to be released into the bloodstream as it does in adults. Adrenaline is ahormone that has a stimulant effect on the nervous system.

Richard Moskowitz, M.D., a homeopathic physician in Watertown, MA (ibid., 610) also discovered hyperactivity in a child after inhaling perfume. However, treatment with homeopathic substances was able to reduce most of this hyperactivity.

Caffeine is present in several brands of soda pop (Coca Cola, Pepsi) and tends to produce hyperactivity in school children. Dr. Benjamin Feingold, M.D. studied the possible link between attention deficit disorder and food additives. Extensive studies tend to report this theory although the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference of Defined Diets and Childhood Hyperacitivity only suggested further investigation into this subject.

In allopathic medicine, hyperactive children with ADD are usually treated with Ritalin, a drug that has serious side effects over a period of time. Since a change of diet, withholding of sugar and caffeine stimulants, organically grown foods and natural foods prepared without additives produce such excellent results, one should seriously consider a less intensive Gerson Therapy regimen in place of drug treatment.

Fluoride . . .

The makers of fluoridated toothpaste feel that the alternative to this toxic substance is that kids won’t brush their teeth at all. What about toothpaste free of these additives? Admittedly, that is no longer easy to find, but it is available. The makers of fluoridated toothpastes as well as the promoters of fluoridated water still claim that cavity-prevention has been ‘demonstrated.’ Dr. John Yiamouyiannis together with Dr. Dean Burke of the NIH have disproved this notion to the satisfaction of a Pittsburgh court. (See the book "Fluoride — the Aging Factor" available from the Road to Health.)

Dr. Yiamouyiannis quotes from the following sources:

"According to the handbook, Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, Fluoride is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic.

"From 1990 to 1992, the Journal of the American Medical Association published three separate articles linking increased hip fracture rates to fluoride in the water

"A study by Proctor & Gamble showed that as little as half the amount of fluoride used to fluoridate public water supplies resulted in a sizable and significant increase in genetic damage.

"The Argonne National Laboratory confirmed that fluoride is capable of transforming normal cells into cancer cells.

"The research of Dr. Dean Burke, former Chief Chemist of the National Cancer Institute, showed that 10,000 or more fluoridation-linked cancer deaths occur yearly in the United States.

"In the largst U.S. study on fluoridation and tooth decay (1993) United States Public Health Service dental records of over 39,000 school children, ages 5-17, from 84 areas showed that the number of decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth per child was virtually the same in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.

"Dr. John Colquhoun, former Chief Dental Officer of the Dept. of Health for Auckland, New Zealand, investigated tooth decay studies from about 60,000 12-13 year old children and showed that fluoridation had no significant effect on the decay rate of permanent teeth.

"The October 1987 issue of the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association reported that a survey in British Columbia with only 11% of the population using fluoridated water had lower average tooth decay rates than provinces with 40-70% of the population drinking fluoridated water, and school districts recently reported the highest cavity-free rates in the province were totally unfluoridated.

"In 1993, the Subcommittee on Health Effects of Ingested Fluoride of the National Research Council admitted that 8-51% and sometimes up to 80% of the children living in areas fluoridated with the amount of fluoride recommended by promoters of fluoridiation have dental fluorosis (fluoride poisioning)."

Are Soy Products Dangerous?

by Charlotte Gerson, with portions reprinted by permission of Newlife

A considerable percentage of the world’s population is undernourished or outright starving. For many years, proteins, preferably from animal sources, have been considered to be the best and most acceptable source of nutrients. However, we also know that it takes some 16 pounds of grains, fed to cows, to produce one pound of meat. In his book Diet for a New America, author John Robbins points out that we could easily feed the whole world if everyone were to become vegetarian. This is an unlikely scenario in the affluent Western world. So, in order to try to feed the hungry, we are always looking for new sources of "good" protein. Much attention has been focused on the soy bean, a widely grown legume that fulfills both the requirement for a high protein food and a widely publicized health advantage: it is low in fat and devoid of cholesterol! This should make it an ideal food, but is it safe?

An extensive discussion on the subject written by Sally W. Fallon, M.A., and Mary G. Enig, Ph.D. appeared in the May 1966 edition of Newlife magazine. Since we have often been asked by a number of our Gerson Healing Newsletter readers why Dr. Gerson prohibited soy products, we should like to report on this thoroughly researched material.

The authors trace the origin of the soybean to the Orient, where it was apparently used during the Chou Dynasty (1134-246 BCE) as a crop rotation material, for its capacity of fixing nitrogen in the soil. Soy products did not serve as food until fermentation techniques were developed. When a method was developed to make soy into a curd by precipitating it with calcium sulfate or magnesium sulfate, the use of soy products started to spread. Fermented soy products, such as miso and tamari sauce, are apparently less harmful than the precipitated ones, such as tofu or bean curd. But tofu accounts for about 90% of the processed soybeans in Asia today, say the authors. It seems that bean curds as a source of protein did not come into use until about 700 A.D.

Fallon and Enig state that the "Chinese did not eat the soybean as they did other legumes, such as lentils, because the soybean contains large quantities of a number of harmful substances." Did the Chinese know this? Perhaps they did, possibly they observed that disease symptoms appeared after eating tofu or other cooked soy products. Among the harmful substances, the authors name "potent enzyme inhibitors, which block the action or trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion."

Apparently, cooking does not deactivate these enzyme inhibitors, and they can produce serious digestive problems such as reduced protein digestion, chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake, enlargement of the pancreas (in animals) and cancer. Soy products also contain another chemical, hemaglutinin, which promotes clumping of red blood cells. These clumped red cells are unable to fully take up oxygen and carry it in the blood stream to all tissues. Hemaglutinin has also been observed to act as a growth depressant. Fermentation deactivates these enzyme inhibitors, or at least reduces the amounts present.

Soybeans are also high in phytic acid, which is present in the bran of hulls of all seeds. This material blocks the uptake of essential minerals in the intestinal tract, including such important ones as calcium, magnesium, iron and especially zinc. Again only the process of fermentation will significantly reduce the phytate content of soy products. Soybeans have a higher content of phytates than any other legumes, making them of questionable safety and nutritional value.

Bearing the above in mind, the authors feel that soy products consumed with meat have a reduced mineral blocking effect; however they warn particularly that vegetarians who eat tofu with the idea that it may act as a protein substitute, risk severe mineral deficiencies. They also feel that most people appreciate the problems of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiencies, but that zinc deficiency produces some especially serious problems: zinc is needed for optimal development and function of the brain and nervous system, aside from its role in the immune system.

The Profit Motive

The average American has not adopted soy products (tofu, tempeh, miso) as a principal food. Soy sauce may be the exception to this rule, even though soy oil is also quite widely used.

About 140 billion pounds of soy beans per year are grown in the US since the end of W.W.II, and the industry is looking for new markets. At this time, the major use for the bean is animal feed, and soy oil is used for hydrogenated fats, margarine and shortening. New soy products are being marketed to the growing "health product" consumers: soy milk, soy baby formula, soy yogurt, soy ice cream, soy cheese, soy flour for baking, and soy protein as a meat substitute for the vegetarians.

During the production of soy milk, in order to remove as much of the trypsin inhibitor as possible, the pureed beans are soaked in an alkaline solution, then heated to about 115° C. in a pressure cooker. Unfortunately, even though most (but not all) of the anti-nutrients are destroyed, this processing also denatures the proteins, so the remaining soy protein is very difficult to digest. The phytate content remains in soy milk to block the uptake of essential minerals. Worse, the alkaline soaking solution produces a carcinogen, lysinealine, and reduces the cystine (an amino acid) content in the soybean. Without cystine, the protein complex is virtually useless unless the diet is fortified with meat, eggs or dairy products, an unlikely situation for vegetarians. These problems arising from soy production are not mentioned on labels, and the public is not aware of them.

"Soy based infant formulas, along with trypsin inhibitors, contain a high phytate level. Use of soy formula has caused zinc deficiency in infants. Aluminum content of soy formula is ten times greater than milk-based formula and 100 times greater than unprocessed milk." While soy milk is tried on infants with milk allergies, allergy to soy products is almost as common. The lack of cholesterol in soy infant formula could inhibit brain development since cholesterol is essential for the brain and nervous system. Chemical additives to soy based foods further add to the problems.

Soy products are widely distributed in third world countries, presumably to overcome a protein deficiency in the diets of starving people. They are also used extensively in school lunch programs, commercial baked goods, diet beverages and fast food products. New publicity promotes soy products for their "cancer preventing properties." While traditionally fermented soy products may contain a cancer preventing chemical, these are contained in an altered state in non-fermented soy products and have no anti-carcinogenic effect. On the contrary, it has been suggested that the rapid increase of liver and pancreatic cancer in Africa is due to the increased use of soy products.

" . . . to remove oil from the soy bean, particularly high pressures and temperatures are required, since this is an unusually difficult process. Furthermore, hexsane or other solvents are always used to extract oil from soy beans, and traces remain in the commercial product. But the high temperatures destroy some of the possible beneficial fatty acid fractions of the soy oil: the Omega-3’s, which are especially susceptible to rancidity when subjected to high pressures and temperatures."

"Claims that the fermented soy products can be relied on as a source of B12 have not been supported by scientific research." Nor do they supply the essential fat soluble vitamins D and A, needed for the absorption of all minerals. Unfortunately, soy products increase the requirements for vitamins B12 and D.

The authors summarize all the above, and possible arguments that soy products have been used for many centuries in the Orient, as follows: "traditional fermented soy products have a long history of use that is generally beneficial when combined with other elements of the Oriental diet including rice, sea foods, fish broth and fermented vegetables. Precipitated (Western) soy products can cause serious problems, especially when they form the major source of protein in the diet."

The Dangers of Chewing Gum

by Charlotte Gerson

I suppose the habit of chewing gum originated with chewing tobacco, known to Native Americans and later introduced into Europe. Tobacco acted as a stimulant, while chewing gum has other effects. Many people experience thirst or a dry mouth after meals, due to excess salt and fat in their foods, or dehydration due to alcohol, sugar and animal protein. Some also experience bad breath, which can be caused by poor digestion as well as certain foods, such as garlic and onions, which leave an unpleasant odor.

Madison Avenue has made it very clear that bad breath is socially unacceptable, so people carefully avoid it. Some chew gum to mask the odor. Advertising has also made people aware that some gum contains sugar, a substance to avoid if one is health conscious. Industry has responded by producing sugarless gum — itself not all that healthy, since it contains artificial sweeteners. There is, however, a less obvious and more dangerous effect of chewing gum.

Our bodies function as total entities, with all activities thoroughly integrated and interdependent. Since our very lives depend on nutrition, digestion is a delicately balanced, highly coordinated process. When we first ingest food — or sometimes even when we see, smell or hear of appetizing items, we begin to salivate. Chewing further stimulates the secretion of saliva — an important carrier of enzymes. The enzymes in saliva help digestion by predigesting sugars and starches before they even enter the stomach. When chewing starts, it stimulates stomach juices to flow, in the expectation of food to come. These digestive juices, also rich in enzymes, are needed to complete the process of breaking down foods into useable nutrients.

When one chews gum for any length of time, available digestive enzymes and saliva are exhausted in the expectation of food that never arrives. When the chewer then eats, there are no digestive juices available to process the food — and the person will suffer stomachaches, poor digestion, gas, and other symptoms.

What is the solution: eat simple foods that do not upset your stomach, dry out or leave a bad taste in your mouth; drink fresh juices or clean water instead of soda, wine or strong drinks. And view the habit of chewing gum as a distinct danger to your digestive process.
